HOLOCAUST AND ANTI-SEMITISMby Alexander KimelI believe that the Holocaust occurred because of the confluence of the following factors: 1. Latent and overt anti-Semitism. 2. Hitler the phenomena. 3. The creation of the SS, Hitler's private army and the SS State. 4. The pasmotic violence of W.W.II. I believed the anti-Semitism allowed Hitler to gain power, thus facilitating the Final Solution. Recently, I realized that there is another potent link between anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, it is the Demonization of the Jews, that desensitized the Germans and the Bystander nations to the plight of the Holocaust victims. DEMONIZATION OF THE JEWS. Even before Hitler gained power the Nazis started an extensive propaganda campaign against the Jews, led by the "Volkische Beobachter" and "The Sturmer". Jews with crooked noses and hands dripping with blood, sucked the vital energy from the German people. Similar poisonous propaganda was dispensed in other Eastern European countries. For example, in Poland the weekly "Polska Bez Zydow" (Poland Without Jews) followed strictly the Sturmer's lead. Even the "Kurrier" an daily paper edited by Father Maksimillian Kolbe , the future Saint Kolbe, stocked freely the fires of anti-Semitism. This demonization of the Jews helped Hitler in executing the insane killing and contributed to the dismal survival rate of the victims. Why was this incredibly crude propaganda so successful? Because it tapped the the tremendous anti-Semitic reservoir that proceeded from the Passion plays, Deicide accusations, blood libels, the images of Judas the traitor with his blood stained silver, etc. All those powerful, subconscious symbols, fed for two thousand years by the Church, penetrated the literature (Merchant of Venice) and the folklore. It is sad, but even the Holocaust crucifixion of the Jewish people, did not stop the demonization of the Jews. We see it today in the resurrected Russian anti-Semitism. We see it even on this list, when the uniqueness of the Holocaust is being questioned and the Jews accused of monopolizing the Holocaust tragedy. The words differ but the prejudicial beliefs are the same.
