HOLOCAUST & COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCEby Alexander KimelThe Holocaust tragedy has shown the vulnerability of the modern man to the overbearing powers of a totalitarian state. Remembering and teaching of the Holocaust is important for moving and changing the COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE, necessary to prevent the reoccurrence of such a tragedy. The uniqueness of the Holocaust rests on the zeniths of the cruelty, irrationality, indifference and most importantly on the TOTALITARITY OF DESTRUCTION. Denying of this uniqueness is revisionist in nature and is detrimental for development of a safer and better world. Presently it is difficult to deny the reality of the Holocaust but it is possible to diminish its significance by such claims, as: HOLOCAUST DOCUMENTATION As the claim goes, the Holocaust uniqueness is primarily due to the amount of documentation available in this age of mass multimedia. I believe that to the contrary, the Holocaust documentation is only marginal, and we never will fully comprehend this tragedy. 6.5 million of people perished dramatically and there are 65 million stories to tell. Stories of slow death, miraculous temporary survival, pain of mothers that choked their babies to death, fathers scraping off the brains of their babies from a wall, etc. Those stories will never be told, because the victims cannot talk. The documentation is not full. The Vatican sealed its archives for a hundred years. Why? In 1941 England broke the German code and had verifiable information about killing of the Jews. This information was kept secret during the war and withheld from the Nurenberg trial. Why? Also. Why were the approaches to Auschwitz not bombed at the same time as the Buna factories? The documentation is far from being full. JEWISH EXCLUSIVITY Charges are leveled, that the Jews monopolized the Holocaust and it is immoral to speak about the sufferings of the Holocaust victims and not to speak about the of millions of genocide victims. I don't believe that pain and sufferings are badges of honor. We are not engaged in a suffering auctions. After all the Holocaust is a universal tragedy and it is important to change our culture and civilization, and remove all the conditions that made this tragedy a reality. I believe that the Jewish people learned their Holocaust lessons. In the last fifty years we are witnessing a gigantic reshaping of Jewish destiny, by the creation of the State of Israel. Within the span of one generation the Jewish ethos changed dramatically. The remnants of the amorphous masses so easily guided into the gas chambers, created a powerful, modern citizen's army - the Israel Defense Force. Never Again became a realistic slogan. We don't need the dubious distinction of exclusivity, but the world needs a reminder of the pitfalls of this self-centered, materialistic civilization with its lip service to ethics and morality. If in doubt, just look at Mr. Hyde and his Tvelve Impeachement Apostles.
