CONDITIONS FOR THE HOLOCAUST
Goldhagen is wrong in his assumption that the Holocaust was made possible by the unique German anti-Semitism. We believe that the Holocaust became a reality because of collusion, or simultaneous existence, of the following conditions:
1. Latent and Overt anti-Semitism. It is true that Hitler gained notoriety by his anti-Semitic rhetoric that consequently helped him in gaining power. It is also true that confiscated Jewish properties were used like seed money to bankroll the so called "German economic miracle." Anti-Semitism was the catalyst but not the cause of the Holocaust. Anti-Semitism existed before Hitler, Jews were killed before, but never on such a large scale. 2. Hitler the phenomena. Hitler was a charismatic, intuitive political leader, appealing to the irrationality of the German people, who identified them with his insane policies, leading them on the warpath. He was a deranged individual, who perceived the Jews as his powerful enemies, bent on destroying him. He was obsessed with the Jewish enemies and made the elimination of the Jewry his main priority. Killing of the Jews weakened Germany and was against the interest of the German people and even the Nazi party. No other German leader, would have been interested in destroying the Jewry. Hitler and Hitler alone was the cause of the Holocaust. 3. The Creation of the German Totalitarian State. The incidental creation of the totalitarian state, in which the wishes of its leader, were executed with blind obedience, made the Holocaust a reality. No other state could execute six millions people without a written order, public discussion, or the slightest protest. 4. Paroxysmal Violence of WWII. The War provided Hitler with a smokescreen, necessary for the Final Solution. In 1941 when Hitler attacked Russia, he intentionally discarded all the accepted rules of war conduct, and increased the brutality of the warfare. On March 3, 1941 he issued his famous Commissar Order, in which he orders the execution f all political commissars (Russian) and the creation of the Einsatzgrouppen. In peaceful conditions the Final Solution could not happen. 5. The SS Organization. The SS, under Himmler's leadership, provided all the firepower necessary for the gruesome enterprises. The SS was a private army of the Nazi party and in reality the private army of Hitler. It was not supported by the German state and it was not included in the state`budget. At the beginning the SS comprised only of 148 people and during the last phases of the war it grew to a strength of 350,000 people. Without the SS, the killing would not be have been possible.
