What is the main Legacy of the Holocaust? The Holocaust is a tragedy for` mankind, because it increased the level of the accepted violence and proven the vulnerability of modern man to the overbearing power of a totalitarian state. Even in our time, the people of Iraq, Libya, Syria, Egypt have little control over their own destiny. Holocaust prevention is the main legacy of the Holocaust. We believe that the Holocaust became a reality because of collusion or simultaneous existence of the following conditions: a. Latent and overt anti-Semitismb. Hitler- the phenomena. c. The creation of the German totalitarian state. d. The paroxysmal violence of the WWII. e. The creation of the SS, Hitler's private army.
ANTI-SEMITISM Anti-Semitism was part and parcel of the western civilization for ages. It started with the schism between Judaism and Christianity in the second century and was reinforced by the teaching of the Fathers of the Church like St Chrisotom, St. Augustine, etc. It was the existence of anti-Semitism that allowed an uneducated corporal assume the leadership of a powerful and cultured nation of Germany. Hitler gained notoriety by his anti-Semitic rhetoric and once he gained power the confiscated Jewish properties were used like seed money to bankroll the so called "German economic miracle." Without anti-Semitism, the Nazis would never gained power and the bloodbath of the WWII, would have been avoided.
Hitler was a charismatic, intuitive political leader, who was able to appeal to the irrationality of the German people, identify them with his insane policies and lead them on the warpath. He was a deranged individual, who perceived the Jews as his powerful enemies, bent on destroying him. He was obsessed with the Jewish enemies to the last moments of his life. Killing of the Jews was against the interest of the German people and even the Nazi party. No other leader, regardless of how chauvinistic he would be, could not have done.
THE TOTALITARIAN GERMAN STATE. The incidental creation of the totalitarian state, in which the wishes of its leader, were executed with blind obedience, made the Holocaust a reality. In no other state could six millions of people be executed without a written order, public discussion, or even the slightest protest. It is also important to note that the duo Himmler Heydrich, playing on Hilter's Judeo-phobia, created an SS -state, a state within a state, thus hijacking the nazi revolution.
PAROXYSMAL VIOLENCE OF WWII In 1941 when Germany attacked Russia, Hitler intentionally discarded all the accepted rules of war conduct, and increased the brutality of the warfare. On March 3, 1941 he issued his famous Commissar orders...in which orders the execution of all political commissars (Russian) and the creation of the Einsatzguppen. The war provided the smokescreen necessary for the massacres of innocent people. Hitler believed that violence an brutality can solve all the social problems.
THE SS ORGANIZATION The SS was a private army of the nazi party and in reality the private army of Hitler. It was not supported by the German state, it was not included in the budget of the State. At the beginning the SS was created by Himmler, had only 148 people. During the last phases of the war the SS grew to 350,000 people. It was a self supporting army, living from plundering the properties of its victims and the profits from extensive slave labor. The SS, under Himmler's leadership provided all the firepower, necessary for this gruesome enterprises.
To prevent a Holocaust repetition, we have to remove all the conditions that made this tragedy possible. We have to foster of development of stable democracies, with strong independent judicial systems, free media. Democracies that are ruled by governments elected by the people and for the people, are the best safeguard against genocides. Private armies, require a supply of weaponry. We have to remove all the fire power that could be used for a creation of private armed groups, that can destroy democracies. Weapons should be available only to law enforcement agencies. Finally, we have to eliminated the latent and overt anti-Semitism, that is corroding the free societies.
